During WWII, Jan De Ruth was imprisoned in numerous concentration camps, including Auschwitz. While imprisoned in the fifth camp De Ruth made his final escape to Czechoslovakia after four previous attempts of freedom. De Ruth began to draw using materials he collected while imprisoned. His first drawing was sold to a prison guard in exchange for a piece of bread.
After escaping in 1955, Jan De Ruth attended Ruskin Art School at Oxford University in London focusing on portraits and lithographs. De Ruth’s works have been exhibited globally.
