    Provenance:
  • Peter Layne Arguimbau is an American painter, restorer and historian of classical art. Layne paints portraits, animals, and landscapes, but is celebrated for his classical marines. Layne's marine and seascape paintings have that luminous look of old world art. His prize-winning works are in the collections of yachtsmen, corporations and even European royalty. But Arguimbau is a versatile painter -- he paints the life around him, including portraits, animals, even religious subjects. Layne now grinds his pigments from powders, makes his own panels using gesso grounds and lead grounds for canvas. Cooks his own oilly-resinous mediums with hard resins of amber, sandarac and colophony. Primarily using raw materials Layne has been able to maintain a consistent quality. Over his life time many paint materials have disappeared or changed dramatically; tube paints are thinned more and more using stablelizers and resonates for shelf life. He describes himself as a classical artist painting in Flemish Technique, grinding his own paints in oils that he cooks. He paints in a studio modeled after the Dutch Masters directing the light with shutters in a barn in backcountry Greenwich.
